[April Fools 2026] User Safety in Prism Launcher

The landscape of the internet has been changing a lot recently - and we’ve been paying attention. Safety, transparency, and responsibility are more important than ever, and some of the smart politicians of the world have realized that as well. Through legislation such as Brazil’s ECA Digital and California’s A.B. 1043, a new era of online safety for the most vulnerable users has begun. We are in enthusiastic support of this, and are thrilled to announce our first steps in proper compliance to ensure the safety of all our users!
What does this mean?
Beginning with the upcoming 11.0 update, Prism will attempt to verify the age of users during install, or during the first launch after updating existing installs.
The goal of collecting this information is to immediately begin filtering and restricting access to servers, mods, resource packs, data packs, and all other external content that are deemed unsafe for those under the age of 18. This is meant to strengthen the experience teens and children have with our launcher to be much more appropriate for their needs, as well as to continue giving parents peace of mind about Prism being a welcoming, family-friendly product!
How will it work?
Following our pillars of privacy, transparency, and accountability, we are partnering with the company Portrayal to assure the age of all of our users.
This partnership opens multiple methods for users to verify their age with us, such as:
- Taking a selfie: Using the most advanced AI models, your age will be accurately estimated based on a scan of your face.
- Using your ID: This will be run against state databases to confirm your age. All information used will be deleted within 90 days.
- Providing your Minecraft username: Activity (account age, server use, etc.) across your account will be used to estimate your age
- Using your credit card: Information will be used from your bank to verify your age.
As always, the safety of the data submitted above is protected by our in-depth Privacy Policy.
What next??
Our team will continue to monitor the ever changing legal landscape of these situations, as well as maintaining transparency about our vendors, introducing more options for verification, and how it will affect those globally.
We’re listening. We’ll get this right. And when we ship, you’ll be able to see for yourselves.*
